Nothing moves like marble.

We love the impression of movement created by the veining inherent in the carbonate stone. What most people don’t love, however, is the concern that comes with cleaning and caring for the popular natural stone. Here’s what you need to know to keep marble clean and looking amazing.

Cleaning and Polishing

Wiping down countertops and surfaces with warm water and a non-abrasive sponge or cloth is the best method for cleaning, but it will not remove etching or stains that have had time to permeate the marble surface. Dry the marble top with a chamois cloth and buff it to a shine by rubbing the entire surface with the cloth in small circles. Cover the marble with marble-polishing paste should make it smooth and shiny, but remember to seek professional advice before attempting to do so.

Surface Protection

Avoid setting hot pans or dishes directly on top of your dining table, liquid-proof table pads are recommended to supply a barrier against spills. Hot pads, table runners, drink coasters and placemats deliver additional protection for your marble tabletop.

Repair: Preventing damage is the best method to care for marble dining tables. Wipe up liquid and food spills as soon as they occur. Honed(Matt looking) marble table top is more porous and will stain more easily while a polished piece of marble table top will stain less but etch more. Etching on a marble table top surface happens when something like lemon juice, alcohol or tomato sauce is splashed, dripped or spilled onto it. If it is not wiped up right away, the acid reacts and eats away at the calcium carbonate in marble table top, creating permanent markings that look like dull, slightly darker spots or rings on the marble.

Removing Stains

For any lingering stains, you can attempt to remove the unsightly marks using the following methods:

  1. Oil-based stains by grease, cooking oil, cosmetics: Clean gently with a soft liquid cleanser, household detergent, ammonia or mineral spirits.
  2. Organic stains by coffee, tea, fruit, food: Clean with a mixture of 12 percent hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia. Or mix Home Baking Soda with small portion of water and apply on the affected area for a day.
  3. Rust stains from metals: These stains must be removed with a poultice (a powder) and are very difficult to remove. In fact, they may be permanent.
  4. Paint stains: Small amounts can be removed with lacquer thinner or scraped off carefully with a razor blade.
  5. Smoke stains: Commercial smoke removal products are available. Contact a stone professional near you for more info.
